Assessments and performance

The Institute supports a system of continuous and comprehensive assessment, continuous in the sense that assessment occurs throughout the year, and comprehensive in the sense that it covers not just  the  materials  taught,  but  also  Islamic  behaviour. To  this  end teachers may use any or all of the following methods. Hold periodic tests, give  homework assignments. Because of the nature and time constraints you child will almost always have homework. We request that you take his/her studies seriously and attend to it as diligently as you would their school work. Learners will also  be assessed on the basis of participation in class discussions and activities. The educator will evaluate behaviour in the class.

The Institute, in addition, will also hold an exam for each course at the end of each term or year. The student’s overall assessment will be based on all of the above components, with the exams counting for a maximum of seventy percent of the final grade, or as the educator may decide. Parents will be given a comprehensive report of the learners performance and development. In some instances we will also acquire external examiners to assess students.

Homework

Homework serves many purposes.  Amongst others, it reinforces the material and content taught during  the  Madrasah  hours.  Furthermore,  it  also  provides  us  an  opportunity to  identify the strengths and weaknesses of the learner. Likewise any special needs of a learner can also be identified.  Additionally, it allows the family an opportunity to take an active interest in what the child is being taught. Parents are also encouraged to discuss curricula developments with us, we certainly value your suggestions and contributions. As a general rule, homework will be less than four hours a week.  It is best if the homework is done in small intervals over several days. While the Institute will strive to do revision in class there is not always enough time, Parents are thus strongly urged to ensure that the learner spend enough time reading at home.  For those who have access to a computer there are many interesting and useful software titles available which may be used to complement work studied at madrasah. There are many advantages to the use of computer software. Please contact the administrator in this regard.

Recognition and awards

With a vision to motivate students to excel, the Institute may recognize students for their achievements at the end of each academic year. Recognition will be based on attendance, performance, extraordinary effort, special projects, etc., or on combination of these criteria. The basis of recognition may change from time to time, and will be made clear ahead of time. Students who satisfy the criteria will be presented with awards that may include books, Qura’n or any other benefits
